The feminine figure is one of timelessness that has endured millennia within the realm of art. Houston based artist Sharon Willcutts is aware of the feminine figure within art and society, but prefers to work within a different realm; one that, through intuition, creates a figurative realm of femininity. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Sharon Willcutts likes to think of her work as “a psychological investigation of a figurative realm.” But despite the abstract form of much of her work, Willcutt’s professional life is far from figurative. She received her initial training as an artist at the Cleveland Institute D’Arte at Lacoste, France in 1982 and received her BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute the following year. In 1988, Willcutts obtained her MFA and continued her already established exhibition career as well as pursuing a career in teaching: she has worked at both the grade school level as well as college, and has taught numerous workshops in the Houston area. Currently adopting mixed-media on paper for much of her work, Willcutts prefers to draw on the natural world as a means to create mystery and desire for a viewer. “I intend to create a kind of axonometric atmosphere that will lure and seduce, which mimics and questions the context of identity,” Willcutts says of her compositions. “Through a very intuitive investigation, I hope to face and embrace a raw feminine calligraphy that is uniquely my own.”
