Product Description

The power and relationship between colors are paramount in the works by Mexican-born Manuel Velazquez. Their potency and allure, in fact, are why Velazquez makes it a point to use strong colors to express his opposition to all things artificial and superficial. His work are primarily dedicated to religious and symbolic motifs that he evokes through references to nature, enabling him to create works that easily fit into everyday settings. Velazquez’s image and Special Edition to Serie XIII, Utopia, uses bold colors and relies on a sense of hope. In it, a shipwrecked boat is home to a blooming tree. For the artist, the tree within the shipwrecked boat is a hopeful image, full of possibility for a better future.

Velazquez was born in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico and received a degree in serigraphy at the University of Veracruz. His works have been displayed on many occasions throughout North and South America and in Vienna, Prague, Tokyo, and Bratislava, Slovakia. He currently is a professor in Xalapa, Veracruz where he is the head of the fine arts department at his alma mater.
