La Fruta de mi Vida
  • Title: La Fruta de mi Vida
  • Summary:

  • Description: Tejana artist Tina Fuentes imbues her line work with a sense of energy and vitality. Inspired by a Mexican bowl of fruit she keeps in her art studio, her lively print Fruta de la Vida meditates on Fuentes’ quest for spirituality. After some loose still life drawings, the bowl developed into a nest or vessel, a metaphor for life. What distinguishes this print from her earlier works is the explosion of color in her palette. For many years, Fuentes worked with a limited palette of black and white. An example of her earlier work is Manita, a print she made as part of Serie V in 1998. Reflecting on both her residencies the artist commented, “Being able to be here and print, it’s glorious! To have someone [a master printer] to say, ‘this is what I want, do it for me,’ that’s the beauty of coming to a place such as this.”

Fuentes was born in San Angelo, but grew up in Odessa, Texas, a more desolate landscape, rich in oil production. She attended the University of North Texas and received a bachelor’s degree in Art Education. Two years later, she was awarded an M.F.A. in painting from the same institution. While living in New Mexico, Fuentes received training at the prestigious Tamarind Institute. She has taught at the University of Albuquerque, the University of New Mexico, and is currently a faculty member at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Fuentes has had numerous one woman, group, museum and gallery exhibitions throughout the U.S. and particularly in Texas and New Mexico.
